The school year may be drawing to a close but NL Health Services is warning families that whooping cough is still circulating and may continue to spread throughout the summer months.
Whooping cough, or pertussis, is a highly contagious respiratory illness caused by a bacteria.
The illness is spread when those infected cough or sneeze.
Symptoms, which start out mild about five to 10 days after exposure, eventually develop into a persistent and worsening cough which can become so bad it makes it difficult to catch one’s breath and could be fatal. Babies are most vulnerable to whooping cough.
NL Health Services says summer vacation brings people together for summer camps, activities and gatherings and it is important to be aware of symptoms and do what you can to protect yourself and others.
Early detection can help prevent the illness from getting worse with antibiotics available to help treat the illness. Testing clinics are available by appointment only.
Vaccines and boosters are also available across the province through family doctors, health clinics and Public Health. Most children receive regular boosters, but adults should get a booster if 10 years or more has elapsed since your last shot.
For a testing appointment call: 709-752-7852 or texting 1-877- 709-0512.
To get a vaccine: Call your family doctor or your local public health nursing office at 1-877-752-8171.
