The province’s health authority is launching a lung screening pilot project in St. John’s and Grand Falls-Windsor to help identify lung issues, including cancer.
The program will include smoking cessation referrals, education and support.
Those between the ages of 55 and 75 who are currently smoking or have smoked in the past for at least 20 years or more, are eligible for the project.
Radiation oncologist and co-chair of the project Dr. Jonathan Greenland says lung cancer is behind the greatest number of cancer deaths in Canada and smoking is a major cause of lung cancer.
He says the screening pilot will help to build a high-quality lung cancer screening/smoking cessation program that can be used to reduce the burden of lung cancer in the province.
If you meet the criteria and are interested in joining the program, you can be referred by your family doctor or call 1-833-752-4964.
