Nicholas Pooran Creates History, Becomes 1st Cricketer To Score…
Star wicketkeeper-batter Nicholas Pooran created history on Tuesday (June 18) by becoming the first cricketer to score 2000 runs in T20Is for the West Indies. Pooran scored 98 runs from 53 balls against Afghanistan during the T20 World Cup 2024 match, which helped him take his tally of runs to 2012 in 92 T20Is.

Nicholas Pooran was on fire for the West Indies on Tuesday (June 18) during the T20 World Cup 2024 match played against Afghanistan in Gros Islet. In the final group stage match of the ongoing shortest format megaevent, the left-handed wicketkeeper-batter faced a total of 53 balls and, with the help of six fours and eight sixes, scored 98 runs. He was unlucky to miss out on a deserving century, but during his career-best T20I knock, Pooran created a new record. The former T20I captain became the first West Indies cricketer in history to score 2000 runs in T20Is.
He has 2012 runs to his name in 84 innings of 92 T20Is played so far. Former opener Chris Gayle is second on the list with 1899 runs in 79 T20Is. During his stay at the crease against Afghanistan, Pooran also broke Gayle’s record of most sixes for the West Indies in T20Is. He has 128 maximums to his name, whereas Gayle finished his career with 124 sixes.

He has 502 sixes to his name in 333 matches.

The 98-run knock by Pooran is the highest individual score in the T20 World Cup 2024, and it helped the West Indies post a total of 218 runs for the loss of five wickets in 20 overs, which is the highest total by any team in the ongoing edition. In reply to the 219-run target on Tuesday, Afghanistan could only manage to score 114 runs for the loss of 10 wickets in 16.2 overs to lose the match by 104 runs.
