NFL insider explains why there’s ‘no need to rush’ Drake Maye
The Patriots hope they’ve found their franchise quarterback in Drake Maye, but it might take some time before he emerges as the starter.
Speaking on NFL Network’s “The Insiders,” reporter Bridget Condon said Maye will definitely have an opportunity to get on the field. At the same time, Condon said, there’s no reason for New England to speed up Maye’s natural timeline.
Condon noted that Patriots offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt and New England quarterback Jacoby Brissett had great success together with the Cleveland Browns in 2022. Brissett posted the best completion percentage and quarterback rating of his career that year.
While their past history doesn’t necessarily guarantee success, she expects that preexisting chemistry to play at least somewhat of a role in a new setting.
With a proven veteran like Brissett in the fold, Maye will have a prime opportunity to learn. Condon believes it would be more advisable to let Maye be a sponge behind a “very capable” option.
“There’s no need to rush Drake Maye,” Condon said. “In talking with people around the Patriots’ organization, they kind of feel the same. There’s nothing that Drake Maye has shown so far during camp that says, ‘We absolutely have to have this guy out Week 1.’”
She referenced Jared Goff and Mitch Trubisky, who were thrown into the fire and struggled initially. Condon believes a little patience can go a long way, as it did with Patrick Mahomes alongside his obvious talent.
“Why not just let Drake Maye sit back, wait a little bit, get comfortable, before enduring all that pressure?” Condon said.
