Newsboy’s horseracing tips and 1-2-3 for every race at Royal Ascot on Saturday
Newsboy marks you card for every race at Royal Ascot and predicts a 1-2-3 for the fixture on Friday from seven highly competitive races
2.30 Chesham Stakes
BEDTIME STORY impressed on her debut at Leopardstown 16 days ago and receives the vote to make it 2-2.
The Aidan O’Brien-saddled filly is bred to run – she’s a daughter of Frankel out of Mecca’s Angel, the dual Nunthorpe Stakes heroine.
Bedtime Story started out in a nine-runner fillies’ maiden in Foxrock, where Ballydoyle supplied the odds-on favourite in Giselle.
But it was the stable’s second string who came home in front with a length-and-a-quarter margin of victory.
That success came in spite of evident inexperience – Bedtime Story looked rough hewn when asked to make her ground, but learned on the job to emerge a cosy winner.
There’s a chunk of progress to come as she bids to give O’Brien a record-extending seventh Chesham Stakes.
Age Of Gold , Pentle Bay and Defence Missile are all promising juveniles with claims of a place on the podium.
NEWSBOY’S 1-2-3: 1 BEDTIME STORY, 2 AGE OF GOLD, 3 DEFENCE MISSILE
3.05 Hardwicke Stakes
CONTINUOUS is the best horse in the race and should prove very hard to beat.
A Group 3 winner at Saint-Cloud as a juvenile, the son of Heart’s Cry looked smart but unexceptional in the first half of his three-year-old campaign, making the frame in the Group 2 Dante Stakes at York and King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot either side of an eighth in the Prix du Jockey Club at Chantilly.
But my selection’s career took off in the second half of the summer.
Returning to York for the Group 2 Great Voltigeur Stakes at the Ebor Festival, Continuous set himself up for a crack at the St Leger with a three-and-three-quarter-length success.
He followed up in the final Classic, charging home at Doncaster to hold favourite Arrest by two and three-quarter lengths before signing off with a strong-finishing fifth to Ace Impact in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp 15 days later.
Ryan Moore’s mount stands out on that form, with Middle Earth , Isle Of Jura and Candleford the most convincing candidates for the minor medals.
NEWSBOY’S 1-2-3: 1 CONTINUOUS, 2 MIDDLE EARTH, 3 ISLE OF JURA
3.45 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes
BELIEVING looks sure to thrive for the return to six furlongs after a fine fourth in the King Charles III Stakes on Tuesday.
Taking in Group 1 races four days apart would be out of the question for a middle-distance horse.
But the quick return to the fray poses no issue for a sprinter – this century, Choisir (2003) and Blue Point (2019) have won both races, while Cape Of Good Hope (2005), Les Arcs (2006) and Kingsgate Native (2008) were beaten on the Tuesday, but in business on the Saturday.
Last year, George Boughey’s Mehmas filly broke new ground with a Listed win at Chelmsford City in April and a Group 3 at Chantilly the following month, and went under by just a neck and half a length behind Regional and Shouldvebeenaring in the Group 1 Sprint Cup at Haydock Park later in the summer.
Out of luck at Sha Tin in April on her return for 2024, Believing ran out the impressive winner of the Listed Achilles at Haydock a week last Saturday before her running-on effort, a length and a half behind Asfoora, at the start of the meeting.
Ascot’s stiff six furlongs and fast ground represent her perfect conditions.
Mill Stream and Shouldvebeenaring, separated by a nose in the Group 2 Duke Of York Stakes, are respected, while last year’s winner Khaadem is a player if in the mood.
4.25 Jersey Stakes
HAATEM deserves his day in the sun after heroic defeats in two Guineas – and is fancied to get it.
A busy two-year-old season saw Richard Hannon’s son of Phoenix Of Spain register two wins – a Bath maiden and the Group 2 Vintage Stakes at Goodwood – from nine attempts.
Haatem returned to action with a convincing success in the Group 3 Craven Stakes at Newmarket in April and then ran above his 16-1 odds with a third to Notable Speech in the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket at the start of last month.
My selection’s stablemate Rosallion split the pair that day and the same horse denied him victory by a head in the Irish version at the Curragh three weeks later.
Compensation awaits.
River Tiber , a length and a quarter back in third in Ireland, is feared most, ahead of Never So Brave and Night Raider .
5.05 Wokingham Stakes
RUMSTAR, back to form on Newbury’s Lockinge Stakes undercard last month, should give a good account of himself.
Jonathan Portman’s son of Havana Grey boasted smart form as a youngster in 2022, landing a Bath maiden, a nursery at Glorious Goodwood and Newmarket’s Group 3 Cornwallis Stakes from seven visits to the track.
Pickings were slim last term – Rumstar missed the target with each of his six darts at the board – but a return to winning form looks close at hand.
There wasn’t much to write home about in a last of 11 on heavy ground at Bath in April, but a length-and-a-half second to Lethal Levi in Royal Berkshire.
A 2lb nudge up the weights still leaves Trevor Whelan’s mount 5lb blow his peak rating, and a fast playing surface is a plus.
Orazio and Desert Cop and last year’s winner Saint Lawrence are all capable of having a say in a wide-open Wokingham.
NEWSBOY’S 1-2-3: 1 RUMSTAR, 2 ORAZIO, 3 DESERT COP
5.40 Golden Gates Stakes
PRIMO LARA has progressed to win both his outings into handicap company – and isn’t done with yet.
On the back of a fourth at Yarmouth, a second at Leicester and an eighth at Newmarket, the son of New Bay started life in the sphere on a British Horseracing Authority rating of 77.
Stepping up to a mile and a quarter from seven furlongs, he proved ahead of that assessment with a three-quarter-length score at Chelmsford City on May 9 and doubled up from a 5lb higher mark at York 16 days later.
There is another 9lb rise to deal with on the back of a comfortable two-and-a-half-length dismissal of Midnite Storm, but it will be a surprise if Jane Chapple-Hyam can’t tease out further improvement for Primo Lara’s hat-trick bid.
Hand Of God , Portsmouth and Miletus are three-year-old who look capable of better and sit at the top of a long shortlist.
NEWSBOY’S 1-2-3, 1 PRIMO LARA, 2 HAND OF GOD, 3 MILETUS
6.15 Queen Alexandra Stakes
POSTILEO did enough on his Flat debut for Emmet Mullins to make him of significant interest in the meeting’s finale.
The seven-year-old son of Galileo was a progressive type in the hands of Roger Varian, winning four handicaps, including the valuable Lanark Silver Bell at Hamilton Park last August.
My selection joined Mullins during the winter and had two outings over hurdles, following a third at Leopardstown with a down-the-field effort at Fairyhouse.
Postileo went of at 25-1 for Navan’s Listed Vintage Crop Stakes on April 27 and came home a nine-length fourth to Thursday’s Gold Cup hero Kyprios.
Mullins has an uncanny knack of bringing his charges to the boil for the big day, and a good run looks in store.
Dawn Rising captured the Queen Alexandra 12 months ago and is respected, along with his Joseph O’Brien stablemate Uxmal and Run For Oscar .
NEWSBOY’S 1-2-3: 1 POSTILEO, 2 DAWN RISING, 3 RUN FOR OSCAR
