Newsboy’s horseracing tips and 1-2-3 for every race at Royal Ascot on Friday
Newsboy marks you card for every race at Royal Ascot and predicts a 1-2-3 for the fixture on Friday from seven highly competitive races
2.30 Albany Stakes
MOUNTAIN BREEZE is expected to uphold the family honour by taking her career tally to 3-3.
The daughter of Lope De Vega is a half-sister to Pinatubo, who landed the Chesham Stakes for Charlie Appleby and Godolphin in 2019 as the third victory of an unbeaten juvenile campaign that concluded with wins in the Group 1 National Stakes at the Curragh and the Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket.
Mountain Breeze made her debut at Newmarket on 1,000 Guineas day, going off the 7-4 favourite for a five-furlong fillies’ maiden.
William Buick was sitting motionless passing the halfway point before sending his mount to the front to beat River Seine by two and three-quarter lengths.
And Mountain Breeze defied a penalty in style over the final six furlongs of the Rowley Mile 13 days later, justifying her 8-13 odds with a comfortable two-and-a-half-length supremacy from New Charter.
There is plenty more to come from a filly who has yet to break sweat – and who is ready for the step up to Group 3 level.
Archie Watson’s Twaafeg impressed at Doncaster on her debut and should go well, while Fairy Godmother and Royalty Bay also appeal.
NEWSBOY’S 1-2-3: 1 MOUNTAIN BREEZE, 2 TWAAFEG, 3 FAIRY GODMOTHER
3.05 Commonwealth Cup
JASOUR was humbled twice in Group 1 company as a juvenile but looks ready to make it third time lucky in the top drawer.
On the back of a neck second at Salisbury on his debut in May 2023, Clive Cox’s son of Havana Grey went one better in a Nottingham maiden the following month before proving himself at Group 2 level with a two-length margin from in the July Stakes at Newmarket.
The wheels came off soon after – a dull eighth of nine behind Vandeek in Deauville’s Group 1 Prix Morny was followed by a last of nine behind the same rival in the Middle Park Stakes at Newmarket on his final outing at two.
Jasour then had 214 days off before the Group 3 Commonwealth Cup Trial Stakes over this course and distance on May 1 – and there was much to like about his comeback.
Customarily keen at the back of the 10-runner field, Jim Crowley’s mount burst through to settle matters from the two-furlong pole, having a length and three-quarters in hand of Adaay In Devon.
A decent pace over Ascot’s six furlongs on fast ground should help Jasour to show his best – and it’s worthy of note that Crowley was on board for both of his Group-race successes.
Favourite Inisherin , supplemented after his Group 2 Sandy Lane Stakes score at Haydock Park, is top of the list of dangers, with Starlust and Givemethebeatboys also respected.
NEWSBOY’S 1-2-3: 1 JASOUR, 2 INISHERIN, 3 STARLUST
3.45 Coronation Stakes
RAMATUELLE enhanced her reputation despite her 1,000 Guineas defeat, and is the choice to gain compensation.
Read the result of last month’s Newmarket Classic and it tells you that Elmalka beat Porta Fortuna by a neck, with Ramatuelle a short head back in third and See The Fire back in 12th.
As is often the case in racing, however, that doesn’t tell the whole story.
The fillies’ test was run at a searing gallop, a race rhythm that suited the horses who flew at a safe distance from the sun during its early stages.
They included Elmalka, who sat last of the 16 competitors, and Porta Fortuna, who settled in midpack.
Ramatuelle, by contrast, was given a cavalier ride by Aurélien Lemaître, who dashed his partner to the front running to the final quarter mile.
It’s understandable that the Christopher Head trainee, who needed to prove her stamina for a mile, proved vulnerable to late assailants – and perhaps it’s of little surprise that connections have turned to Oisín Murphy to take over at the controls today.
What isn’t up for debate is that Ramatuelle, a Group 3 and Group 2 winner as a juvenile, is up to this class.
Even if she had the Guineas run to suit, Elmalka is a horse who is going places very quickly.
She looks bound for the podium, along with Opera Singer, who should come on for her comeback third in the Irish 1,000 Guineas.
NEWSBOY’S 1-2-3: 1 RAMATUELLE, 2 ELMALKA, 3 OPERA SINGER
4.25 Duke of Edinburgh Stakes
SHADOW DANCE has no easy task on his return to action – but is taken to prove up to the job.
Unraced at two, the Roger Varian-saddled grey made the frame at Windsor (twice) and Chester before laughing at a handicap mark of 79 when making his debut in the sphere at Haydock Park in September.
Shadow Dance signed off for 2023 with a second in a big-money handicap at Newmarket the following month, going under by half a length to Alsakib, a winner then competing from 96 but a fine fourth off 105 in Tuesday’s Copper Horse Handicap.
James Doyle’s partner has been gelded since then and must prove his fitness after 252 days off, but it’s interesting his trainer has chosen this assignment for Shadow Dance’s comeback.
Dangers lurk at every turn, with favourite Ethical Diamond, Crystal Black, Sea King and Fairbanks all with a role to play.
NEWSBOY’S 1-2-3: 1 SHADOW DANCE, 2 ETHICAL DIAMOND, 3 SEA KING
5.05 Sandringham Stakes
FOREVER BLUE is improving and should thrive for the chance to tackle a mile for the first time.
Blue Point’s daughter made the perfect start to her career with a three-and-three-quarter-length verdict in a six-furlong maiden at Haydock Park last August.
The Ralph Beckett trainee didn’t shine when beating just one of six rivals home in the Group 3 Prestige Fillies’ Stakes over seven at Goodwood next time.
But she was back in business on her reappearance with a length-and-a-quarter supremacy in a novice stakes back in Newton-le-Willows 15 days ago, a performance that caught the eye of big spenders Wathnan Racing.
Forever Blue’s finishing effort suggests this stiff mile will prove ideal and a British Horseracing Authority mark of 95 looks for her handicap bow looks within range.
Without Words ran with distinct promise at Listowel on her debut for Joseph O’Brien and rates a threat, in company with Arisaig and Battle Queen.
NEWSBOY’S 1-2-3: 1 FOREVER BLUE, 2 WITHOUT WORDS, 3 ARISAIG

5.40 King Edward VII Stakes
THEORY OF TIDES has been in the public eye no more than six weeks – but is quickly making up for lost time.
It wasn’t until May 10 that the son of Galileo set foot on a racecourse for the first time, going off at 13-2 for a one-mile novice stakes at Nottingham.
Theory Of Tides didn’t seem to know where he was during the early throes but visibly learned on the job, producing a power-packed surge that propelled him to the front strides from the line for a half-length margin.
Returning to action at Yarmouth 17 days later, my selection defied a 7lb penalty with ease, galloping to a two-and-a-half-length supremacy from Steel Tiger.
That success persuaded John and Thady Gosden that Theory Of Tides, not among the original entries for the ‘Ascot Derby’ but interestingly holding an engagement in next month’s King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Stakes, should be supplemented.
Kieran Shoemark’s mount has a stack of as-yet untapped potential to draw upon and gets the vote to remain unbeaten.
French raider Calandagan also has more to offer, while Diego Velazquez and Voyage are others worthy of consideration.
NEWSBOY’S 1-2-3: 1 THEORY OF TIDES, 2 CALANDAGA, 3 DIEGO VELAZQUEZ
6.15 Palace of Holyroodhouse Stakes
JUBILEE WALK comes here at the top of his game and another good account is surely on the cards.
James Ferguson’s son of Study Of Man made it third time lucky in a novice stakes at Salisbury in August, and the perfect comeback with handicap score over six furlongs at Kempton Park in April.
Jubilee Walk completed the hat-trick at York’s May fixture, stepping back to five furlongs to hold Vantheman by a length and a quarter.
That victory was gained from a British Horseracing Authority rating of 90, and the Oisín Murphy-partnered three-year-old has the progress up his sleeve to overcome a 7lb rise in the weights.
Dyrholaey and Dorney Lake, like my selection unbeaten this season, have to enter the picture and Blue Storm is another name to throw into the mix.
NEWSBOY’S 1-2-3: 1 JUBILEE WALK, 2 DYRHOLAEY, 3 BLUE STORM
