Newmarket July Festival Thursday tips: Best bets for ITV action on day 1, July 11

Day one of the July Festival at Newmarket brings us four contests for the ITV cameras, including two Group 2s.

But as we are feeling generous we thought you’d like some tips for the three other races that aren’t on the telly too.

Let’s kick off with a quick run through our Thursday tips, with the reasons why we’ve picked them further down the page.

If you fancy a punt or two, check out the Planet Sport race centre which will show you all the live odds, racecards and results.

Good luck and please gamble responsibly.

(Please be aware selections could become non-runners after article’s first publication)

Newmarket tips in full:

13:50 (Nemarket) Ancient Wisdom

14:25 (Newmarket) Electrolyte

15:00 (Newmarket) Woodhay Wonder

15:35 (Newmarket) Hamish

16:10 (Newmarket) Miss Fascinator

16:45 (Newmarket) Lead Artist

17:20 (Newmarket) Fifty Nifty

13:50 (Newmarket) Ancient Wisdom

Ancient Wisdom is another who would appreciate cut as he returns to action in the Bahrain Trophy Stakes.

Winner of the Futurity Trophy on bottomless going at Doncaster, Ancient Wisdom returned to action in the Dante at York where he proved no match for impressive winner Economics and certainly did not look fully effective on quicker going.

While the Derby ground was good to soft, the Epsom track never appeared to suit Ancient Wisdom as he came home eighth but again this track should be more to his liking.

Switching up to a mile and five furlongs here, Ancient Wisdom can put his name into the early St Leger mix.

14:25 (Newmarket) Electrolyte

Electrolyte only narrowly failed to prevail in the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot but compensation awaits in the Kingdom Of Bahrain July Stakes.

A winner at Ayr first time up, he led home the stands’ side group in Berkshire, but Rashabar still had his measure by a nose on the other side of the track.

If Electrolyte can repeat that effort, it should be good enough.

15:00 (Newmarket) Woodhay Wonder

Woodhay Wonder is one from two on the July course and four from five at Newmarket generally.

The Tom Ward-trained winner finished third in the G2 Duchess Of Cambridge Stakes at this meeting last season and arrives following a good fourth contesting a Royal Ascot handicap in latest.

Elmonjed shaped nicely when third tackling a competitive York handicap last outing and remains unexposed.

Tropical Island produced a decent effort running sixth in that same event, while Dorney Lake could yet do better now back up to six furlongs.

15:35 (Newmarket) Hamish

Hamish can add a Group Two victory to his laudable CV in the Princess of Wales’s Stakes.

William Haggas’ charge is one of the most consistent horses in training, holding his rating of 117 since the end of 2022 and notching up no less than eight Group Three victories.

The eight-year-old really thrives when the mud is flying but as long as there is some soft in the going, he can usually put his best foot forward as he showed when posting a career-best effort last time out.

Beaten a length by Irish Champion Stakes victor Luxembourg in the Coronation Cup, Hamish finished with a real flourish which is no surprise given he has won up to a mile and six furlongs during his career.

Dropping back to Group Two level here on a more conventional track, Hamish can go well again as long as there is ease in the ground.

16:10 (Newmarket) Miss Fascinator

Miss Fascinator looked in need of the experience when runner-up on debut over course and distance, but the the Roger Varian trained filly should still be considered.

Well-bred newcomer Adoon Valley, ticks plenty of boxes when resuming representing powerful connections.

Magic Mild struggled in the Listed Marygate Fillies Stakes at York on her second outing. Might do better back among this company now tackling six furlongs.

Market support for the Hugo Palmer-trained debutante Dream Voyage would be worth noting.

16:45 (Newmarket) Lead Artist

Lead Artist left the impression he was more than good enough for pattern class races when quickening up to score by five lengths at York in May. The well-bred Dubawi colt is expected to take this en-route to better things.

Kitty Rose ran an excellent race to finish fifth off top-weight attempting the Sandringham Stakes at Royal Ascot. Makes the shortlist in receipt of 5lb from her rivals.

Bold Style finished a good runner-up in the Listed King Charles II Stakes over 7f on the Rowley Mile here during May. Could yet have more to give now stepping up to 1m.

Al Musmak cannot be dismissed down in grade.

17:20 (Newmarket) Fifty Nifty

It could pay to side with twice-raced handicap debutant Fifty Nifty.

The Tom Clover-trained gelding looked good scoring on debut at Yarmouth. Not disgraced in a novice event under a penalty at Doncaster last time and this opening mark could prove workable.

Twirling scored at Doncaster before running below-par in a fierce Royal Ascot handicap.

Urban Sprawl may go well fresh and cannot be ignored on first outing since finishing third over 1m at Kempton in December.

Sterling Knight looks interesting tackling this trip for the first time on softer ground.
