New Westinghouse hub will bring 100 new engineering jobs to Kitchener
The future of nuclear reactor engineering has a new home in Kitchener, with Westinghouse cutting the ribbon on its brand new facility.
A new Westinghouse global engineering hub at the Sportsworld complex is now open, and is the first of its kind in Canada, and one of only five such hubs for that company in the world.
The company says the new 13,000 square foot hub “will be home to global design engineering teams dedicated to supporting the CANDU operating fleet and international projects, as well as the global deployment of Westinghouse new build technologies, including the advanced AP1000 reactor, AP300 small modular reactor, and eVinci microreactor.”
The hub includes high-tech training capabilities, and a laboratory dedicated to the company’s fire protection engineering services.
Westinghouse says the Kitchener location was chosen “for its proximity to customers and supply chain, as well as to the University of Waterloo and other outstanding colleges and universities that train top talent.”
Kitchener mayor, Berry Vrbanovic was on hand with other dignitaries for the ribbon cutting ceremony, Tuesday.
In a statement, he says the hub “will bring new jobs and continue an exciting chapter in our long history of research and development, innovation, and collaboration.”
Tony LaMantia, President & CEO of Waterloo Economic Development Corporation, says “this is the future of nuclear energy, and it starts here in Waterloo Region.”
The 100 new jobs at the hub will be filled before next year.
