The metro region is getting a new multiplex recreation facility which will include ice rinks and curling sheets.
Premier Andrew Furey made the announcement this morning, saying the sportsplex will be capable of hosting regional and national sports competitions.
Government has so far set aside $500,000 to cover design costs for the facility which will be built in the growing Galway area of the city.
Information on tenders issued and awarded will be available in the coming days.
“This facility will also bolster the province’s ability to attract large-scale sporting events, providing economic benefits to the tourism and hospitality industry and Newfoundland and Labrador communities,” said Furey.
Olympic curling champion Brad Gushue and Galway developer Danny Williams were also on hand for this morning’s announcement.
An estimated date for completion of the facility was not specified.
