N.S. police watchdog to investigate after serious crash in HRM

Nova Scotia’s police watchdog is investigating after attempting to stop a suspected impaired driver in Middle Sackville.

Halifax RCMP say around 3:30 a.m. on July 6, officers attempted a traffic stop on a suspected impaired driver who was merging onto Hwy. 101 from Beaverbank Rd.

The vehicle did not stop and in the interest of public safety, the officer did not pursue the vehicle.

Mounties say the pickup truck shortly thereafter left the road and flipped trying to merge onto Exit 2A at Hwy. 101.

Two people fled the accident, including a 33-year-old Lower Sackville man who was arrested later that morning.

A youth, and one woman who were stuck in the flipped truck, needed to be extracted.

As a result of injuries, Halifax RCMP have referred the case to the Nova Scotia Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT), which independently investigates all serious incidents which arise from the actions of police in Nova Scotia.
