MP Ken McDonald doesn’t know if Prime Minister Justin Trudeau should stay or go, but he doesn’t blame his colleagues in Ontario for being worried about the recent by-election loss in the former Liberal stronghold of Toronto-St. Paul.
McDonald, who recently announced that he won’t be seeking re-election, admits that losing the seat is a “big loss” for the Liberal party.
Following the defeat, New Brunswick Liberal MP Wayne Long wrote an email calling for Trudeau’s resignation as leader, to which McDonald replied “well said.”
McDonald says the comment was to congratulate Long for speaking up because he did the same thing last year at a national caucus meeting in London, Ontario. He told the meeting that “as a party, our best before date is getting very close. And if we get to that point without changing things it’s going to get worse. And, so be it, we’re here.”
McDonald supports calls for an in-person caucus meeting.
That way, he says people can freely speak their minds about where they need to go as a party and where they need to go in terms of the leadership.
