‘Most awkward golf interview ever’ red-faced reporter speaks to wrong man!
Golf Channel reporter Lauren Withrow was left red-faced during an on-course interview at the Korn Ferry Tour’s BMW Charity Pro-Am as she mistakenly interviewed the wrong sports star during the first round.
Withrow thought she was talking to former college football icon Vince Young, who was the No.3 pick in the 2006 NFL Draft.
However, she was actually speaking to Citadel assistant football coach Everette Sands.
Withrow began the interview with:
“Six season in the NFL, arguably one of the best NCAA quarterbacks of all-time at Texas, picked up golf about four years ago.
“What’s the biggest shift you’ve made going from the ultimate team sport to the ultimate individual sport?”
Sands, to his credit, went along with the interview but politely handled the situation by telling Withrow she had the wrong person.
He replied:
“Now, I apologise. You have the wrong person. I’m Everette Sands. Which, I’m a football coach. But, the thing is, the great thing about golf is I’m not only competing against myself but I’m competing against everybody else.”
A red-faced Withrow then quickly switched it up by asking Sands about his first Pro-Am experience on the Korn Ferry Tour, which is the lower tier of the PGA Tour.

After the round, Sands told WCIV of the mix-up with Golf Channel:
“Young lady came up and said ‘Vince, which I thought she was introducing herself to me. She said, ‘Can I get an interview after you tee off? And I was like, ‘Sure’.”
“I teed off and she came up and she started talking about being one of the best quarterbacks in the NCAA and playing for Texas and six-year NFL career and I was like, ‘She think I’m Vince Young.’ It was a very interesting moment.”
Sands was playing alongside tournament pro Will Gordon.
They missed the cut with a 36-hole total of 2-under par.
