According to Business Insider, the layoffs at Microsoft’s Azure division will affect teams such as Azure for Operators and Mission Engineering. Sources familiar told to media that the Azure for Operators segment alone could see up to 1,500 job cuts.
In response to the Reuters inquiry, a Microsoft spokesperson informed that organizational and workforce adjustments are routine for the company. They emphasized the ongoing commitment to prioritize strategic growth areas to benefit customers and partners.
This latest round of job reductions follows earlier cuts of 1,900 positions at Activision Blizzard and Xbox in January. Additionally, other tech giants like Amazon.com and Salesforce have also implemented layoffs affecting hundreds of employees in 2024.
Despite the layoffs, Microsoft’s Azure cloud platform continues to experience robust growth, fueled by substantial investments in artificial intelligence (AI). The company’s strategic partnership with OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT technology, provides Azure with access to advanced AI capabilities, further bolstering its position in the market.
The Azure for Operations and Mission Engineering teams are integral parts of the Strategic Missions and Technologies organization established in 2021.
