Meet The Tennessean’s 2024 All Midstate boys and girls tennis teams
Some of the Tennessee’s best high school tennis players were showcased during the state singles and doubles tournament last month during Spring Fling and the Nashville area several capture state titles.
Here are The Tennessean’s 2024 All Midstate girls and boys tennis teams.
Boys tennis team
Martin Grier
MBA | Senior
Grier joined teammate Daniel Torre to advance to the DII-AA doubles state tournament championship match, finishing runner up to McCallie.
Rich LaLance
Siegel | Junior
LeLance didn’t drop a game, winning in straight sets in all three of his Class AA singles state tournament matches to capture the state championship with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Hume-Fogg’s Elliot Parker.
Evan Ly
Brentwood | Junior
Ly split time with teammate Stephen Smith as Brentwood’s No. 1 singles player this season. But Ly captured the District MVP award and was the district tournament singles champion. He finished as the region runner-up. He didn’t lose a singles match until the region championship, losing to Hume-Fogg’s Elliot Parker.
Elliot Parker
Hume-Fogg | Sophomore
Parker captured the Region 6-AA singles title with his win over Ly. He knocked off William Blount’s Blaine Barber and Dobyns-Bennett’s Emery Corpstein to advance to the AA singles state championship match where he finished state runner-up to LaLance.
Stephen Smith
Brentwood | Junior
Smith helped the Bruins capture the Class AA doubles state tournament championship with teammate Drew Miller as they knocked off Science Hill, 6-4, 7-6. He also helped the Bruins boys take home the team state title as Brentwood beat Science Hill.
Daniel Torre
MBA | Junior
Torre joined teammate Martin Grier to advance to the DII-AA double state tournament championship match, finishing runner up to McCallie.
Girls tennis team
Avery Franklin
Ensworth | Sophomore
Franklin rolled to a 6-3, 6-1 DII-AA state quarterfinal win over Briarcrest’s Emma Huggins to earn a state semifinal appearance. This is Franklin’s second straight All-Midstate selection.
Shelby Franklin
FRA | Junior
Shelby Franklin is also making her second straight All-Midstate team. She joined with Brooke Franklin to capture the DII-A doubles state title, beating USJ, 6-1, 6-2.
Annalee Kelly
Summertown | Sophomore
Kelly was one-half of Summertown’s Class A doubles state championship team, joining Emma Perry to knock off Union City, 6-2, 6-1. Summertown’s team also captured the team state title with a 4-2 win over Union City.
Libby Konig
Summertown | Senior
Konig rolled into the Class A singles state tournament championship match with wins over Covington’s Danial Blalack (6-0, 6-0) and Cannon County’s Jenna Bush (6-4, 6-0) to finish as state runner-up.
Evelyn Risner
Brentwood | Junior
Risner captured the Class AA singles state championship with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Blackman’s Ozge Yuksel. Risner captured a quarterfinal win over White Station’s Emma Wang and a semifinal win over Farragut’s Riley Cassity. Brentwood girls also captured the team state championship with a 4-0 win over Collierville.
Ozge Yuksel
Blackman | Senior
Yuksel finished as Class AA state runner-up after beating Tennessee’s Averie Stalnaker (6-4, 6-2) and Cookeville’s Adeleine Moore (6-1, 6-0).
