Mechanical Issue Casts Uncertainty on Start Date for New Marine Atlantic Vessel

A mechanical issue has been discovered on Marine Atlantic’s newest vessel, but potential impacts on when the vessel comes into service are unknown at this time.

The Ala’suinu first arrived on the North Sydney side from China in April.

Marine Atlantic says since the vessel’s arrival in Canada they have been completing various activities required to bring it into service, including regulatory certifications and a review of its operating system.

Recently, they say technicians identified an issue with the ship’s lubrication system.

Crews are on site and a full review of the issue will be completed in the coming days. As well, Marine Atlantic is working with the ship’s owner , Stena North Sea Ltd., to correct the issue.

The vessel, which replaces the Atlantic Vision, is scheduled to come into service on June 14th. An update on the situation is expected early next week.
