Nepo babies should take note when it comes to Maya Hawke‘s latest comments on how nepotism has affected her career.
Maya’s parents — in case you didn’t know — are actors Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke, who were married from 1998 to 2005.
In addition to racking up a considerable acting CV over the past six years or so, Maya also just released her third studio album Chaos Angel — and in a new interview with the Times of London, she addressed how she’s benefited from having famous parents.
Maya specifically addressed previous comments she’d made about her role in Quentin Tarantino’s 2019 film Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood. “I never meant to imply that I didn’t get the part for nepotistic reasons — I think I totally did,” she said.
She also reflected on whether her accomplishments through nepotistic connections have been “deserved.” “‘Deserves’ is a complicated word,” she said.
“There are so many people who deserve to have this kind of life who don’t, but I think I’m comfortable with not deserving it and doing it anyway. And I know that my not doing it wouldn’t help anyone.”
Maya went on to acknowledge that she occupies “a lucky place” and has a “really honest and positive” relationship with her parents — and she even cracked a joke about why nepotism was the ultimate path for her career.
“I saw two paths when I was first starting, and one of them was: change your name, get a nose job and go to open casting roles.”
