Matty Healy’s Mother Denise Welch ‘Couldn’t Be Happier’ About His Engagement to Gabbriette Bechtel
Matty Healy’s mother is over the moon about the British rocker’s engagement.
On Tuesday, June 11, the 1975 frontman, 35, revealed via Instagram that he’s engaged to his model girlfriend Gabbriette Bechtel after the two attended a mutual friend Charli XCX‘s Brat show in Brooklyn that evening.
Early Wednesday morning, the rocker’s mom, actress Denise Welch, reacted to his engagement news on her U.K. talk Show Loose Women, saying. “I obviously have known for a few weeks that Matty got engaged.”
“… They went over to see their friends Charli and George in New York,” she shared of Healy and Bechtel, “and I woke up this morning to the fact they’ve put it on Instagram.”
The TV personality, 66, also revealed that Healy proposed to Bechtel, 26, with a custom black diamond ring that he had “made for her” while expressing her excitement over the couple’s “Instagram official” news.
“I couldn’t be more thrilled,” Welch added. “We couldn’t be happier — she is everything I would want in a daughter-in-law. I’m thrilled.”
Following the Charli XCX concert on Tuesday, Bechtel broke the news of her engagement to Healy on her Instagram Stories. “MARRYING THE 1975 IS VERY BRAT,” the model captioned a photo of herself sporting her black diamond gem. She tagged Healy in the post, too, which he regrammed on his Stories. (Charli is herself engaged to a 1975 band member, drummer George Daniel.)
The “About You” singer and Bechtel were first linked in September after they were photographed kissing, hugging and holding hands around New York City. A few days later, the couple was spotted cozied up at a Brooklyn event showing some more PDA.
In the months since going public with their low-key romance, the pair have made several appearances together, including during New York Fashion Week and at Healy’s band’s concerts.
According to Bechtel, it took four years of her and the guitarist trying to meet before they finally connected in person. “He came to L.A., and we’ve been in love ever since,” the model told Homme Girls earlier this year, adding that the couple often order takeout and play Fortnite in bed.
