Marvel’s Blade Movie Faces Yet Another Setback As It Loses Its Director Again
Summary
- The
Blade
reboot faces a new setback, with director Yann Demange exiting the project before production. - Marvel Studios and Disney have not yet commented as the second director walks away from
Blade. - The release date in 2025 doesn’t guarantee smooth sailing for the troubled Marvel Cinematic Universe film.
The Blade reboot may be back to square one, because the Marvel Cinematic Universe movie has lost its second director. As The Multiverse Saga pushes forward, Mahershala Ali’s Blade has taken a long time to become a reality. The reboot was announced all the way back in July 2019, when Ali made a surprise appearance at San Diego Comic-Con to announce his involvement with the MCU. Since then, the movie has gone through two directors, with the first, Bassam Tariq, first departing back in September 2022.
Despite having a 2025 release date, The Wrap reports that Marvel Studios and Blade director Yann Demange have parted ways ahead of the reboot’s production start. According to their sources, Demange’s departure “was entirely amicable.” At the time of this story’s publication, Marvel Studios and Disney had yet to comment on the Blade report.

Will Marvel Cancel Blade?
Blade Has Faced One Obstacle After Another
With another director having moved on from Blade, it isn’t absurd to question whether the movie is even happening at this point. Blade has, for quite a while, been at the center of jokes suggesting it could be cancelled, given how it has been almost five years since the initial announcement. As the Blade movie cast is still attached to the film, Marvel has so far not made an announcement that the reboot is being pushed back or canceled altogether. It still holds a November 2025 release date, though another delay isn’t out of the question.
As of right now, Marvel Studios has reportedly started searching for a new Blade director to take over for Demange. According to additional reports, the studio is not looking to rush the production in the hopes of prioritizing its quality, meaning that perhaps the creative vision for the film has not been finalized. Whether or not the current Blade script will be used remains to be seen, though The Wrap notes Eric Pearson, who wrote Marvel’s upcoming Fantastic Four, is now working on the latest draft.
If Blade were to get canceled in the foreseeable future, that doesn’t mean the MCU has to abandon its plans with Ali. He’s already cameoed in the MCU, albeit with only his voice, so erasing him entirely doesn’t make sense. They could always have Blade take part in other MCU movies and TV shows, ideally in a Midnight Sons project with other supernatural players in the franchise. For now, time will tell if Marvel Studios will provide additional updates on Blade in the coming months.
