Manual student succeeds on the court and beyond with help from West Louisville Tennis Club
With so much violence being written about our young Black youth in the West End, it is a refreshing sight to see a Manual High School, multi-talented student on the tennis courts at Chickasaw Park. His name is Marion Whitfield. He is an aspiring tennis player in a sport once not too kind to his hue. But those issues have changed for the better, thanks to the likes of Arthur Ashe, the William sisters, Coco Gauff, to name a few.
The West Louisville Tennis Club has been instrumental in helping him continue his quest to become a better tennis player with a pro coach from one of the local tennis clubs. Another donor recently provided him with a new racket. As you know, equipment is expensive.
On rare occasions, his practices extend into the late evening when the court lights are activated. So, tennis is prime for him being a member of his tennis team.
Other accolades are attributed to him; a great student; Symphonic Band at Youth Performing Art School member for alto and tenor saxophone; Performance in ” A Raisin In The Sun”; Nominated for 2025 European Performance Tour; Varsity Letter Club for Tennis.
Other musical talents include the piano and keyboard. Someone heard him play and was impressed to the extent that he will perform at the Muhammed Ali Museum for a YMCA fundraiser on June 13, 2024 at 7 p.m.
