Madden 25 cover does not feature a Chiefs player

EA Sports has announced that San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey will grace the “Madden 25” cover.

McCaffrey is the first running back to be featured on the front of the popular NFL video game since Adrian Peterson and Barry Sanders in 2014. McCaffrey is also the first 49er to be honored.

Last season, he was named the Associated Press offensive player of the year, racking up 2,023 yards from scrimmage and 21 touchdowns.

Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen — the 2024 Madden honoree — commented on McCaffrey’s selection.

Takeaway

I believe this is a swing-and-miss from EA Sports. McCaffrey is not the perfect player to be front-and-center on the upcoming release.

As we saw in 2023, McCaffrey can run up a lot of stats as he helps his team win regular-season games. In Super Bowl LVIII, though — when the 49ers needed him the most — the Chiefs held him in check.

The perfect cover would have been quarterback Patrick Mahomes and tight end Travis Kelce standing back-to-back to represent the Kansas City Chiefs’ back-to-back Super Bowl victories. If the Chiefs three-peat this season, EA should have Mahomes, Kelce and Chris Jones to the cover.
