Live thoroughbred horse racing returns to Colonial Downs in one month

NEW KENT, Va. (WRIC) — In one month, live thoroughbred horse racing will return to Colonial Downs for the 2024 season.

Exactly one month from Tuesday, June 11, thoroughbred horse racing will make a come back to Virginia’s premier racetrack, Colonial Downs, to prepare for another legendary season. The New Kent racetrack is considered the widest grass racing surface in the nation, according to a representative with Colonial Downs,


The 2024 season will be a 27-day live race season held over a period of nine weeks, beginning July 11 through Sept. 7.

“The 2023 race season at Colonial Downs was an incredible success, setting new records for the number of visitors, race days, races and horses, as well as record live and off-track betting,” said Frank Hopf, Senior Director of Racing Operations at Colonial Downs. “We’re excited to build on this success as we take things to a new level in 2024. With North America’s widest grass track, a great schedule of family-friendly activities and daily promotions, we provide guests with an exciting day of racing and an unforgettable experience at Colonial Downs.”
