Led by Niagara Parks, the historic Whirlpool Golf Course is receiving a modern makeover

While it is primarily known for its famous falls, Ontario’s Niagara region has many other notable attractions. With a plethora of wineries and outstanding restaurants, the area offers travellers a variety of experiences. It is also home to more than 40 golf courses, including the historic Whirlpool Golf Course.

Built in 1951, Whirlpool is a classic parkland-style track designed by renowned architect Stanley Thompson. Widely celebrated as Canada’s finest golf course designers, the Canadian Golf Hall of Famer crafted 178 layouts around the world, with Whirlpool being his final 18-hole project in Canada before passing away in 1953.

To improve the experience for golfers, Niagara Parks has begun a multi-year restoration project. The project will be executed in phases to minimize disruption to public play and ensure the course’s top-notch conditioning is maintained throughout the renovations.

The Whirlpool Golf Course is undergoing a multi-phased renovation.

The project lead is architect Ian Andrew, a Thompson expert who has restored many of the Toronto Terror’s courses. Andrew Golf Design conducted an extensive assessment, identifying modifications that have been made to the original design. Among the changes underway are restoring tee box lengths to their original locations and eliminating bunkers and side mounds not part of the initial design. By returning the course to its original layout, Niagara Parks aims to realign Whirlpool Golf Course with Thompson’s vision of providing enjoyable yet challenging play for golfers of all skill levels.

While the course is undergoing updates, the Whirlpool Bar + Lounge has already transformed. The revamped space now offers golfers a perfect setting to unwind and socialize after the round, enhancing the overall golfing experience.

With excellent golf, wine and eats, the Niagara region is the perfect destination for your next golf getaway. If you are looking to book a tee time, visit niagaraparks.com/book.
