CHARLIE LAKE, B.C. — Lakepoint Golf and Country Club sees the substantial increase in club memberships as the potential for more residents to discover the game of golf at the course in Charlie Lake.

With club nights featuring bands, weekly ladies’ nights, and a junior program for youngsters, the course in Charlie Lake seems to have something for everyone.

According to general manager Forrest Liddicoat, the movement along the course feels more like mid-summer than the start of the season, but he admits there are some challenges in getting players to swing the clubs mid-week.

“We usually open around Mother’s Day weekend, and we were able to open two weeks early this year,” said Petticoat. “Course conditions have been much better to open the year.”

“It’s only the end of May, but the traffic on the course gives a July type of feel [at the course] right now.”

Liddicoat feels more people have been coming around to try the game of golf, and the course is “pretty much jam-packed” on weekends.

New ideas have been proposed to captivate potential members’ attention, such as attending the Fort St. John Trade Show and being present on social media.

Lakepoint is showcasing the chance for women to take up the sport by giving their ladies’ nights on Tuesday evenings a different theme, which began with “Golfing with the Greeks” on May 28th.

Non-members of all levels enjoyed a chance to go on the driving range and play a nine-hole round for $25, which included a Mediterranean-style meal and staff dressing in Greek-themed togas.

Liddicoat says future ladies’ nights may have themes centered on cultures worldwide, including a Hawaiian-themed evening.

“It’s just something to have ladies come out and have a good time,” said Liddicoat.  “It’s less about keeping score and swinging the clubs to find out if they will enjoy it.”

“We’re trying to give people something extra for some fun and have the ladies enjoy a night of golf and socializing.”

July 18th will feature the Junior Open, open to all golfers in the area aged eight to 18. Liddicoat says registration will open in the coming weeks.

Two tournaments will be hosted at Lakepoint in August. The Peace Country Open match-play tournament will occur from August 2nd to August 5th, and the Bold Promotions Pro-Am will be held from August 7th to August 9th.

The pro-am will feature professionals from the Vancouver Golf Tour paired up with teams of local golfers.

Liddicoat says proceeds from the event will go toward a local charity chosen by Bold.

As the season progresses, Liddicoat hopes the course will welcome seasoned golfers and those swinging a driver on the fairway for the first time.

“I think people have perceptions our course is private,” Liddicoat says. “But it’s quite the opposite and anyone can come here and we welcome everybody to come and play from all skill levels.”
