Jays Swept By Red Sox

Red Sox 7 Blue Jays 3

A short rant….we got blown out, and we couldn’t get an at-bat for Orelvis Martinez. I don’t understand why we couldn’t find a moment for him.

Kevin Gausman said that the Jays pitchers had to be perfect, or the team wouldn’t win. And he wasn’t perfect.

It was yet another irritating game. We had:

  • Two on, none out, in the first and didn’t score.
  • Two on, one out, in the second and didn’t score.
  • Two one, one out, in the third and, well, you know.
  • The bases loaded, there were no outs in the fourth, and WE SCORED. TWO RUNS!! Addison Barger and Isiah Kiner-Falefa started things off with singles. Kevin (or George) Kiermaier singled in Addison. Kiermaier stole second. Spencer Horwitz walked. Then Justin Turner hit into a 6-4-3 double play, but we got a run. Vladimir Guererro followed with a hard-hit line drive to center (110.2 mph, .720 eBA), but Romy Gonzalez made a nice catch. It almost carried over him.
  • In the fifth, we only had one base runner. Springer doubled with two out.
  • We had a three up/three down sixth.
  • Two one, no outs, in the seventh, and we scored one on a wild pitch.
  • Three up/three down eighth.
  • And Horwitz singled to start the ninth, but that was it.

We had 10 hits (two extra-base hits, both doubles) and, of course, were 1 for 15 with RISP.

We need to hit some home runs. It is hard to string together four hits to get runs. But a home run gives you a run. Gotta hit the ball harder.

If you want something approaching, good news: Vlad had the two hardest-hit balls of the game, the lineup and a 112.2 mph single. Barger hit a 109.5 mph double. Even Springer and Kiermaier had hard-hit balls (106.7 and 105.2, respectively).

Horwitz, Turner (nice job in the two hole) and Barger had two hits each. Varsho (with a walk) and Jansen had 0 fors.

Gausman wasn’t great. 5 runs, 4 earned in 5.2 innings. He gave up two home runs.

Tim Mayza came in with two out and two out, and got the hit ground ball you would want, but it rolled through the infield, costing us (and Gausman) another run.

Génesis Cabrera threw a scoreless inning, perfect inning.

Ryan Burr got lit-up, giving up 3 hits, 2 runs, 1 earned because of a Guererro error.

Zach Pop got the last two outs of the eighth.

And Bowden Francis had a quick ninth, but then it didn’t matter anymore.

So poor pitching, no hitting with RISP and crappy fielding (errors on Gausman, Kiermaier (a poor throw home) and Gausman (throwing away a pickoff throw).

The good news is that the series is over. And better news, tomorrow is an off-day.

Jays of the Day: IKF (.102 WPA, 1 for 4, but the one was a nice job on a hit and run, terrific swing, hitting behind the runner leaving first), Turner (.088, for a 2 for 4) and Kiermaier (.081, 1 for 4).

The Other Award: Gausman (-.246), Jansen (-.175, 0 for 4, he’s kind of lost at the plate), Varsho (-.114, 0 for 4, walk), and Springer (-.091, 1 for 4, 3 k).

Tomorrow is an off-day, and then we have a series in Cleveland.
