Jays Lose To Astros
Astros 5 Blue Jays 3
This one was interesting.
The Astros got three runs in the first and we thought it would be a long day. Singles from Jose Altuve and Alex Bregman and a Yordan Alvarez walk loaded the bases before the first out. A 3-1 ground out scored a run. And then a Jon Singleton single scored two more. A walk and two popups ended the inning. Thirty pitches for Chris Bassitt. It looked like he was going to have a very short day.
But we got the three runs back in the bottom of the inning. Singles from George Springer and Danny Jansen started things. After Vlad struck out, Davis Schneider singled to load the bases. Spencer Horwitz singled home two. And Alejandro Kirk doubled in the tying run with just one out and runners on second and third.
But Ernie Clement lined one right at the bag at third. Horwitz didn’t have much of a lead, but there was no chance for him to get back. Bad luck, but there was nothing Spencer could have done.
Thankfully, Bassitt settled down. He would got five innings, giving up just one more run in the fifth.
And Trevor Richards allowed a solo homer in the seventh.
Genesis Cabrera got four outs without allowing a baserunner. Chad Green pitched a scoreless ninth.
Unfortunately, we finished our scoring in the first inning.
We had some chances:
In the sixth, Vlad and Davis Schneider started the inning with singles. But Horwitz flew out, and Kirk and Clements each ground out (Ernie’s was a hard-hit ball down the third base line, but Bregman got in the way.
We also hit into four double plays, had a caught stealing, and Kiermaier bunted into a force out at second.
We had 10 hits. Horwitz had 3 (all against lefty pitchers). Schneider and Springer had 2 each. Leo Jimenez was 0 for 1 with a walk in his first MLB game.
It was yet another of those games. We’ve had too many of them. 3 for 9 with RISP sounds good, but we only had the one extra-base hit (Kirk’s double).
Jays of the Day: Horwitz (.248) and Schneider (.128. Nice to see him hitting again).
The Other Award: Clement (-.317), Kirk (-.185), Bassitt (-.167) and Vlad (-.100).
Tomorrow, we start a weekend series in Seattle.
