ITA Final National Rankings Includes LCU – Lubbock Christian University Athletics

TEMPE, Ariz. (May 30, 2024) – The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) announced the final national rankings for 2023-24 season, and Lubbock Christian University’s men’s tennis program finished No.41 nationally. Individually, Martins Abamu was nationally ranked No.50 in men’s singles and he joined teammate Kelly Giese as the No.37 nationally ranked doubles team in NCAA Division II tennis.

Abamu was a staple over his two seasons with the Chaparrals tennis program. The Lagos, Nigeria native posted a 19-14 singles record and 16-9 doubles record this season, and leaves LCU with a 40-22 career mark in singles and 30-18 career record in doubles. The two-time ITA Cup qualifier is the lone Chap to achieve 40 career wins in singles and 30 wins in doubles.

Giese was injured throughout most of the season, but did compete in eight doubles matches and six singles matches. He was 6-1 in completed doubles matches (all were No.1-doubles matches) and 5-1 in singles matches. The sophomore from Manhattan Beach, Calif. was 3-0 in doubles when teamed with Martins this season.

LCU entered the national rankings, as a team, for the first time this season. They were NCAA postseason qualifiers for the second consecutive season with an 18-7 overall record. A six-win improvement over a 12-win season from last season.
