Is Nick Kyrgios playing at Wimbledon 2024? Latest injury updates and ranking for Australian tennis star | Sporting News Australia

Nick Kyrgios has been out of action for an extended time.

A torrid run of injuries has severely limited the tennis star’s time on the court, seeing him miss several grand slam tournaments in the past couple of years.

The Sporting News has the latest news on his status for Wimbledon 2024.

Is Nick Kyrgios playing at Wimbledon? Latest updates and news

Kyrgios will not play at Wimbledon in 2024.

It marks the second consecutive year the Australian will be absent from the famous grass court tournament.

He has struggled with wrist, knee and foot injuries in the past few years.

Kyrgios’ last competitive match was in June 2023, when he lost to China’s Wu Yibing in Stuttgart.

His most recent grand slam tournament appearance was a quarter-final with Karen Khachanov at the 2022 US Open.

The 29-year-old started hitting again a few months ago but is not putting a timeline on his return due to the seriousness of his injuries.

“It’s arguably been one of the hardest years of my life tennis-wise,” Kyrgios told the Australian Open Show podcast in April.

“I’ve had some really hard conversations with myself, if I want to keep doing this.

“So I know there’s still fire in the belly, which is good, it’s healthy … I definitely will be coming back.

“It’s just hard to put an exact date on it because the injury was quite severe.”

Kyrgios won’t be sitting at home during Wimbledon this year though, having been announced as part of the BBC’s broadcast team for the tournament.

He has experience in analysis and commentary, working for Eurosport at this year’s Australian Open, and appearing on other tennis programs.

The Canberra-born talent also hosts his own podcast Good Trouble With Nick Kyrgios.

BBC respond to Nick Kyrgios criticism

Kyrgios’ inclusion in the BBC’s Wimbledon presentation team for 2024 has drawn a significant amount of criticism.

Last year, the tennis star pleaded guilty to assaulting former partner Chiara Passari during an argument in Canberra 2021.

He did not record a conviction.

Magistrate Jane Campbell described the incident – where he pushed Passari to the ground – as an act of “stupidity” and “frustration.”

BBC responded to those questioning Kyrgios’ addition to the broadcast team.

“As a current and high profile player, Nick Kyrgios will provide insight and analysis of the action on the court from his experience in the game,” the broadcaster’s June 4 statement read.

“We are in no way condoning his cited previous actions or behaviours, on and off the court, and he is employed to share his views on tennis only. He has provided similar services to other major sports broadcasters in recent months.

“The legal process he was involved in has concluded, is well documented, and he has spoken about it publicly.”

What is Nick Kyrgios’ record at Wimbledon?

Kyrgios had a memorable Wimbledon debut, defeating Rafael Nadal en route to reaching the quarter-finals in 2014.

He achieved some good results in the following years but couldn’t make the next step.

Then, in 2022, he achieved a breakthrough, reaching the final in an impressive run at the All England Club.

Nick Kyrgios’ last Wimbledon match and result

It was a career-best tournament for Kyrgios last time out at Wimbledon in 2022, capped off by a blockbuster decider against Novak Djokovic.

Djokovic ultimately secured his 21st grand slam and a seventh Wimbledon title by beating Kyrgios 4-6 6-3 6-4 7-6 (3) in the men’s singles final.

The Serbian had to come from a set down to overcome the Australian, who was playing in his first-ever singles grand slam final.

Djokovic hadn’t even taken a set off Kyrgios in their previous two meetings, but the No.1 seed stood tallest on Centre Court.

Nick Kyrgios ranking

Kyrgios does not have a rank in singles or doubles due to his inactivity.

He did hold a protected ranking of No. 21 due to his long-term injury problems, however, that expired in March this year.

Once he does return to the court, he will likely be granted wildcards into certain tournaments.

When is Wimbledon 2024?

The 2024 edition of Wimbledon will begin on July 1 with the main draw of the men’s and women’s singles.

It will wrap up on July 14 – the day of the men’s singles final.
