Infamous beer run for Oilers captain Connor McDavid ‘wasn’t for him’

Article content

Everyone’s seen it.

Except for Stuart Skinner, it seems.

“I have no idea,” the Oilers starting netminder said when Postmedia posed the question of whose job it is to pick up beer for McDavid now. “I don’t even know what you guys are talking about.”

You know, the cringeworthy clip that makes you feel sorry for the NHL’s top superstar, who can’t even go out in public without getting recognized by his fans, some of whom can play it cool.

And others, who so obviously cannot.

Not that you can blame them for getting caught up in playoff fever right now, as the Oilers sit one series away from potentially hoisting their first Stanley Cup in 34 years.

Then again, it’s not like his teammates can run protection for McDavid out in public 24/7.

“I know. He’s a big boy,” Skinner said. “He is a big boy, I don’t have to look after (him). I think he’s probably a little bit stronger than me.

“Well, no, that’s not true. I’m much, much stronger than him.”

While he didn’t see the video before being asked about it, Skinner was able to provide a hint into what brought the Oilers captain to the liquor store that day — as if celebrating a hard-fought conference championship to reach the final round for the first time in 18 years wasn’t cause enough.

“Well, I can tell you,” Skinner said, “it wasn’t for him.”
