Indigenous elegance on full display at Calgary fashion show and market

Calgary got another treat as Indigenous fashion was on full display with models and spectators coming to see a wave of creativity.

On July 6 at the Confluence Historic Site and Parkland, Indigenous Fashion Week held a market and fashion show called Indigenous Elegance to celebrate talented designers from across Turtle Island.

The market featured Indigenous artists who showed off their talents through pieces of art and appeal highlighting the vibrate Indigenous culture of Alberta.

Originally the show had 18 designers registered however, due to unforeseen circumstances the evening show was canceled.

In the 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. show, ten designers dressed models in their latest designs all with inspirations taken from their Indigenous heritage.

Shania Betts traveled from Banff to Calgary to support her friend from Winnipeg who was a model in the show.

Betts shared she is happy to support her friend and is ecstatic that Indigenous designers have a space to show off their designs.

Models who took part in the show varied in levels of experience with a handful of models hitting the runway for the first time.

Local model Atlantic Blackfinder of Siksika is very new to modeling and expressed their excitement as being a model helps designers show off unique styles of appeal.

The showcase of talent also featured performances from local hip-hop artist Valkyrie and country sing-songwriter Ashly Ghostkeeper who also took a stroll down the runway.
