Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharma’s wife faces backlash for supporting Palestine
Ritika Sajdeh, wife of Indian skipper Rohit Sharma, deleted her “All Eyes on Rafah” Instagram story after reportedly facing online backlash. This phrase has been widely shared on social media as a show of solidarity with Palestine, following Israeli airstrikes and shelling in the southern Gaza city of Rafah that killed over 45 people on Sunday.
Ritika Sajdeh’s social media post went viral, sparking a wave of online trolling. While some accused her of not addressing Indian issues, others mockingly questioned her awareness of Rafah’s location. According to CNBC, the controversial story has been deleted.
Prominent Bollywood stars, including Kareena Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan, Triptii Dimri, Samantha Prabhu, Fatima Sana Shaikh, Swara Bhasker, and Dia Mirza, have voiced their support for the people of Palestine.
Following Hamas’ rocket attacks on the Tel Aviv area, Israel launched airstrikes on Rafah. The airstrikes struck a tent camp housing displaced civilians, killing 45 people and injuring over 200. According to the Israeli military, the attacks in southern Rafah also resulted in the deaths of two Hamas operatives.
Iran and others have condemned the attack by sharing the phrase ‘All Eyes on Rafah’ on social media. Iran’s embassy in New Delhi posted that this phrase refers to the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Rafah, Gaza, where over 1.4 million Palestinians are seeking shelter amidst an alleged genocide.
Hamas, aho controls the Gaza Strip, is engaged in an ongoing conflict with Israel. Last October, Hamas forces launched a cross-border attack into Israel, killing numerous people and capturing several hostages.
