The Stadium and Its Unique Appeal

  • Fan Expectations: Typically, fans look forward to seeing Virat Kohli’s elegant cover drives or the fast-paced bowling from Pakistan. However, this time, they will also be captivated by the new stadium’s design and structure.
  • Nassau County Stadium: Built in just over 100 days, the stadium has quickly gained attention and admiration. It is described as a “modular marvel” and an “impossible project” by Don Lockerbie, the T20 World Cup 2024 Venue Development Officer.

Finding the Right Venue

  • Search Process: An extensive eight-month search for a suitable third venue for the World Cup led to the selection of Eisenhower Park in Nassau County.
  • Contract and Construction: The ICC signed a contract with Nassau County in November 2023. Construction began on January 8, but actual building started on February 18, just 103 days before the first warm-up game. The stadium is unique for being fully modular, made from steel and aluminum, unlike traditional concrete structures.

Creating the Pitches

  • Drop-in Pitches: Due to the tight deadline, the ICC opted for drop-in pitches, a proven method in Australia and New Zealand.
  • Adelaide Oval Turf Solutions: The ICC worked with this Australian company, which specializes in drop-in pitches. Six trays containing the pitches were shipped to Georgia, then moved to Florida for preparation.
  • Final Installation: In April, the pitches were transported to New York and installed in May. Four pitches were placed in the main playing area, with six in the practice area.

Stadium Completion and Inauguration

  • Global Effort: The construction involved extensive coordination across continents, resulting in the completion of the 34,000-capacity stadium.
  • Inauguration: The stadium was officially opened on May 15 by Olympic legend Usain Bolt, alongside notable cricketers, including Sir Curtly Ambrose.
