Babar Azam was not expecting another debacle when he was reappointment Pakistan’s white-ball captain just ahead of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. The new regime of the Pakistan Cricket Board decided to sack Shaheen Afridi after one series and the command was given to Babar. The end result is disaster. The Men in Green have been eliminated from the global tournament from the league stage.
The defeats against the United States of America and India ended their hopes. Pakistan needed a favour from Ireland but rain spoiled everything. The USA vs IRE contest was called off and the sub-continent team was knocked out.
Babar failed as a captain and batter and his leadership was below-par. He didn’t score heavily and made shocking decisions as a skipper. His equation with Shaheen Afridi and Mohammad Rizwan has taken a hit.
Former India player and the 1983 World Cup winner, Krishnamachari Srikkanth has questioned Babar’s performance in the shortest format.
“I don’t think Babar should play T20 cricket. I mean you can’t do this tuk-tuking all the time in T20 cricket. They say Babar scored 4,000 runs like Virat or Rohit, but his strike rate is only 112-115,” he said.
