Hoover police warns about golf cart and low speed vehicle dangers, requirements

HOOVER, Ala. (WBRC) – Hoover Police now reminding the public of proper Golf Cart and low speed vehicle requirements.

The Department says that with Summer now here they are getting more reports of golf carts on public roadways.

Some are even being driven by children.

Hoover Police stress that any vehicle traveling on a public road must be driven by a licensed driver and must be registered with the county you reside in, meaning you must obtain a tag and have insurance just like a regular vehicle.

Now if you live in a gated community, it is considered private property and residents should consult with their HOA for any regulations pertaining to golf carts, ATVs, or low-speed vehicles.

Still every year hundreds get injured in accidents involving golf carts or low speed vehicles. Elle Gilmore is a living example. She stressed this is a serious situation and that she has also noticed more and more golf carts driving on public roads.

“I know in our neighborhood, we have tons of golf carts and tons of kids driving golf carts and, you know, running stop signs and not fully paying attention,” Gilmore said.

Elle Gilmore lost her leg when she was thirteen. She was driving around a turn when the golf cart flipped and drug her leg teen feet through gravel. The last thing she wants is for others in her community to go through that same pain.

“It is really unsettling and it really hurts. Not really myself but just knowing what could happen to them and watching what my parents went through with me. I would hate to see anyone’s parents, or siblings or family go through that.”

One last reminder, you are not supposed to be driving a golf cart or a low speed vehicle on the sidewalk either.
