Hoops 4 Hawaii hosts 24-Hour basketball marathon to raise funds for keiki and kupuna
HONOLULU (KHON2) — Hoops 4 Hawaii gears up for an ambitious 24-hour basketball marathon, scheduled to commence this weekend with the goal of collecting $40,000 to benefit local children and seniors.
Brigette Namata interviewed Roger Dequina and Jordan Kauwe, key figures behind Hoops 4 Hawaii, to shed light on the event’s objectives and logistics.
Dequina clarified that the marathon will kick off on Father’s Day weekend, starting at 8 a.m. on June 15th and concluding at the same hour on June 16th, ensuring a full 24 hours of basketball action.
Kauwe elaborated on the origins of Hoops 4 Hawaii, tracing its inception to their participation in a similar event, Hoops for Hope, in Boston.
Inspired by their experience, they launched Hoops 4 Hawaii last year, aiming to channel their passion for basketball into charitable endeavors.
Last year, proceeds were allocated to support two local organizations, Ronald McDonald House of Hawaii and PALAMA Settlement.
This year, they aspire to amplify their impact and expand their community outreach.
Participants and volunteers are encouraged to register through the Hoops 4 Hawaii website, where they can sign up to fundraise as players or contribute their time to support event logistics. Kauwe emphasizes the inclusivity of the event, welcoming individuals of all ages to join the cause.
Looking ahead, Kauwe envisions Hoops 4 Hawaii expanding beyond Oahu to encompass neighboring islands and potentially mainland states, underscoring their commitment to addressing local needs and fostering community engagement.
