Men’s Golf News
Some pretty good golf is being played in the Men’s League at Southampton Golf and Country Club these days.  About this time of the year, members have played enough golf that their games are getting better and better and often this results in some very low scores being posted, particularly in the net score area.

Over the first couple of months of the year, scores are often not as good as they were at the end of last year, and handicaps begin to rise.  Handicaps are calculated by Golf Canada, a system where members input their scores to a program and a handicap is generated based on your best eight scores out of the last twenty rounds.  So, it doesn’t take very long for one’s handicap to rise two, three or four points at the beginning of the year when your game is not so good.

Now, more than two months into the golf season, players are lowering their scores, but their handicaps remain higher than their scores would suggest, and low net scores are the result. It’s not sandbagging as some may suggest but that’s a topic to be covered later.

In the A-flight, reserved for those with handicaps from 0 – 8 on the front nine holes, Jim Martin tied his previous low score of 38 to win First Low Gross.  Derryl Urstadt took Second Low Gross with a 39 and Derek Johnston had a 40 to take Third Low Gross.
Jim Angel won First Low Net with an even par net score of 35 while Bruce Towner and Rocky Weller shared Second Low Net with net scores of 38.

In the B-flight, for players with handicaps ranging from 9 – 14, Gord Moore shot a fine round of 41 to win First Low Gross.  Paul Nugent was one stroke back with a 43, claiming Second Low Gross and Bill Hatt took Third Low Gross with a 46.
Regan Gascon won First Low Net with a net score of 30 and Mike Pitzen was five strokes back with a net 35, good enough for Second Low Net.  Mike O’Donahue won Third Low Net with a net 37.
Gord Wright was Closest to the Pin on the ninth hole and Doug Hamilton sunk the Longest Putt on #6.

Senior Men’s Golf News
Some exciting news in the Senior Golf this week.  Kent McVeigh, a regular member of the Senior Men’s League scored his first hole in one on the eighteenth hole.  The eighteenth hole is 185 yards long with all kinds of trouble waiting for you if you mishit your ball to either side of the fairway, and the green slopes from right to left so if you hit your ball to the right side of the fairway, it’s almost impossible to get up and down.
But Kent didn’t have to worry about any of that.  He hit his driver straight down the fairway and his ball landed in front of the green and rolled up to the hole and dropped in.  Ron Wilson was his playing partner that day and witnessed the event.  Congratulations Kent!
