In the heart of downtown Edmonton, The Helm stands out as a beacon of sophistication for menswear thanks to Top 40 Under 40 alumnus Chad Helm. But Helm is more just a pretty face and boutique owner (Chad modelled for Armani, among other high-end brands); he is the driving force behind downtown Edmonton’s revitalization efforts. As part of the Downtown Recovery Coalition — a 25-person steering committee dedicated to revitalizing the area — Helm advocates for a safer and cleaner downtown Edmonton.

It is hard not to root for the success of a store that is owned by someone so invested in the success of the local community. So whether you need a sharp suit for a business meeting or a stylish outfit for a weekend outing, The Helm has you covered.

Shades of Grey

If edgy, minimalist designs are your style, then Shades of Grey is the store for you. This locally owned, family run boutique aims to “fill a void” in the Edmonton boutique scene. Its claim to fame is its personalized shopping style that helps you choose from a variety of beautiful clothing — I walked in to take photos for this story, and walked out having tried on a bunch of dresses. If you want what all the influencers are wearing while supporting a local business, Shades of Grey stays up to date with the trendiest brands.
