A year and a half after the retirement of 2022 Horse of the Year Flightline to stud at Lane’s End Farm, some of the same connections are teaming up to debut his 3-year-old half brother, Eagles Flight, in a $54,000 maiden race at Santa Anita Park May 27.
Out of the graded stakes-winning Indian Charlie mare Feathered , the bay colt is further by a two-time Horse of the Year in Curlin . Flightline, produced from the same dam, is by the legendary Tapit .
Feathered’s three other foals to race were of modest racing ability: Good On Paper (War Front ), a winner of one of seven starts and $52,940; Voron (Pioneerof the Nile), a winner in Russia; and Olivier (Tapit), unplaced in three starts before his retirement in April.
Both Flightline and Eagles Flight were bred by Jane Lyon’s Summer Wind Equine. Summer Wind co-owns Eagles Flight with Hronis Racing and Will Farish.
Eagles Flight has been sharp in his morning drills, leaving workmates far behind. He enters Monday’s race off three consecutive bullet workouts for trainer John Sadler, who also conditioned Flightline. Flightline’s regular jockey, Flavien Prat, is aboard.
Eagles Flight is the 2-1 morning-line favorite in the Monday’s six-furlong race, the eighth on the card, breaking from post 2 in a field of 10 . Among his main challengers is the thrice-raced Santarena , second in his last two starts.
