Green Belt Tennis Club Bidding Farwell to Bubble

The Green Belt Tennis Club is bidding adieu to a structure that has withstood the test of time.

The famous bubble, which has been providing shelter for players for the last 40 years, is coming down in the coming weeks to make way for a new structure.

Past President of the St. John’s Tennis Association, Robert Salsman, who is also leading fundraising activities for the bubble’s replacement, says structures of its kind don’t typically last four decades, but in this case, Newfoundland weather proved beneficial.

The bubble was erected for four courts in 1985 and was eventually extended to six courts. “It’s held up ever since, surprisingly, because normally those bubbles wear out due to UV exposure, but of course, in St. John’s we have a lack of that and as a result the bubble has lasted well beyond what those types of structures normally do.”

The Green Belt Tennis Club has reached out to all former players and club members for “one last hit” this Friday evening, and will be accepting donations to help with fundraising for the new clubhouse. The event will take place this Friday from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m.
