GNWT adjusts fuel prices for 10 NWT communities

Fuel prices are changing in 10 NWT communities – going down in some places, but up in others.

“The prices of heating and motive fuel will decrease in Wekweètı̀, and gasoline prices will decrease in Jean Marie River, Nahanni Butte, Tsiigehtchic and Whatı̀. Fuel prices will increase in Colville Lake, Délı̨nę, Gametì, Nahanni Butte, Sambaa K’e and Wrigley, largely due to increased transportation costs,” said the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) in a news release, adding fuel price adjustments for government customers will be similar.

The GNWT sets retail fuel prices – for things like heating fuel, diesel, gasoline, and jet fuel – to recover the cost of providing fuel to the communities not otherwise serviced by the private sector.

The territorial government has to set prices to recover the cost of providing the fuel, which includes the wholesale cost and transportation costs.

Typically, prices are adjusted twice a year – after resupplies by summer barge and winter road – but may also be adjusted in response to things like the carbon tax.

The territory’s infrastructure department handles purchasing, storing, and transporting fuels for 16 NWT communities, and supplies 10 of these communities with fuel through the Petroleum Products Program.

Prices were last changed on February 12, 2024.
