When the strapping bay filly stepped off the van, Fred Seitz Jr. of Brookdale Farm was elated. “I didn’t know what to expect, but to see a filly like she is step off the van and come into our stall, it made this even more exciting.”
Cataloged as Hip 426 in the July 8 Fasig-Tipton July Selected Horses of Racing Age Sale, the New Jersey-bred filly by Fast Anna boasts a hot pedigree. Girl Trouble is a half sister to arguably the fastest 3-year-old in the country right now—Book’em Danno . The 3-year-old gelding by Bucchero won the Woody Stephens Stakes (G1) last month impressively at Saratoga Race Course.
The 4-year-old stakes-winning filly has sire power on her side as well. She is by the late Fast Anna, sire of this year’s Kentucky Oaks (G1) winner, Thorpedo Anna .
“Of course, anytime you have pedigree updates like that, and the page sort of coming to life as it has, that’s exciting,” said Sarah Seitz of Brookdale Farm.
Girl Trouble is a two-time stakes winner, notching stakes wins at 2 and 3. She posted her stakes victories, the 2022 Future Stars Filly Division Stakes and the 2023 Parx Futurity, by a combined 11 1/4 lengths. She also ran second in the 2023 Ruthless Stakes at Aqueduct at 3 and has been on the board in 11 of 16 starts. She has accumulated earnings in excess of $280,000.
Tom and Sue McGrath of Swilcan Stable, co-owners with LC Racing, are no strangers to talented fillies. They raced the Eclipse champion 2-year-old filly of 2020—Vequist (Nyquist ), also under the care of Girl Trouble’s trainer Robert “Butch” Reid Jr. She was born and raised at Brookdale Farm.
Girl Trouble was a modest $15,000 yearling purchase from the Stuart Morris consignment at the 2021 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Eastern Fall Yearling sale. Girl Trouble will not be flying under the radar this time.
Fred Seitz explained that after Book’em Danno won the Woody Stephens on the Belmont Stakes (G1) undercard along with another grade 1 win in the Acorn Stakes (G1) by Thorpedo Anna—that was the motive behind her owners’ decision to enter her in the sale. In this business, you have to strike while the iron’s hot.
“She’s still a racehorse that’s got some future, and the Fasig-Tipton July Sale is a good spot for that kind of filly,” said Fred Seitz. “That coupled with the update of Book’em Danno made sense to put her in this sale.”
“She’s very attractive, a great mind, she’s real easy going, correct, and pretty-bodied,” he continued. “Just an attractive physical to go along with the pedigree.”
“We’re very thankful to the McGraths and Glenn Bennett of LC Racing for this opportunity,” said Sarah Seitz.
The Fasig-Tipton July Selected Horses of Racing Age Sale kicks off July 8 at 3 p.m. ET.
