Starting pitching wasn’t a problem until recently, but the rotation has held the club close to .500 until now; you had to know they would hit a rough patch sooner or later. As Gausman said, it isn’t easy to pitch when you know you have to be perfect to have a shot at a win. Sooner or later, the pressure had to get to them.

• Bichette will be activated for tomorrow’s game, barring the unforeseen.
• Jordan Romano is ‘playing light catch’.
• Yimi Garcia is throwing 120 feet.
• Varsho should be able to come off the bench tonight.
• Joey Votto is out with back tightness but should be back playing ‘soon’.
