Premier Andrew Furey will provide an update on the forest fire near Labrador City today.
Furey will be joined by MHAs Lisa Dempster and Perry Trimper, as well as provincial forestry officials.
The Premier will speak to media virtually at 12:15 p.m.
The Upper Lake Melville region continues to open its doors to thousands of evacuees from the west as they flee a giant forest fire which continues to threaten Labrador City and, to a lesser extent for the moment, Wabush.
The MHA for Lake Melville says they have become one giant family.
Perry Trimper says the towns in the region are doing what they can to help out. There are children’s activities scheduled for today, churches have been providing three meals a day, and there is a transition going on in the community.
Unlike yesterday, today will be a dry one with temperatures in the low twenties. Trimper says the fire has not advanced over the last couple of days, but “that could change today.” Trimper says they will be watching to see how effective efforts to contain the blaze are.
Meanwhile, Premier Andrew Furey continued his lobby in Halifax at a meeting with his provincial counterparts on a regional approach to firefighting and training.
He says he’s already convinced the Atlantic premiers that Gander is the ideal place for that type of concept. “I think it’s a great location for an Atlantic centre for forest fire fighting, training,” says Furey, “both on the ground and in the air.”
