Fundraiser started for man from India who died in Lynn Canyon waters

A fundraiser has been started for the family of a man who jumped from a cliff in Lynn Canyon a week ago and drowned.

Harman Singh Sandhu has been identified as the 21-year-old man who leapt into the water at Twin Falls Bridge in the canyon on July 3 and died en route to hospital after being pulled from the water a half-hour later.

“We are devastated by the sudden loss of Harman Sandhu, who tragically died in an accident,” read a post on the GoFundMe started several days ago by Jatinder Singh Chahal. “Harman was a beloved member of our community, known for his kindness and vibrant spirit.”

The funds are to help Sandhu’s family back in India have his body transported home so they can perform last rites, said Chahal. “Your contribution will help alleviate the financial burden on his grieving family and ensure that Harman can be laid to rest with the dignity and respect he deserves.”

North Shore Rescue and other first responders warned thrill-seekers after Sandhu’s fatal leap, one of over two dozen fatal cliff jumps in the province in the past decade, according to the B.C. Coroners Service.

Rescue search manager Dave Barnett told Postmedia News last weekend that he was told Sandhu was not a strong swimmer.

North Vancouver RCMP have said he may have been goaded into jumping, despite protective fencing along the cliffs and bridges above Lynn Canyon and several signs warning how many people have been injured or lost their lives there.

Barnett said the pools below the steep, slippery slopes are fast-moving and can make it difficult to get out.
