Field Of Gold

There’s six runners for this very open novice stakes for two-year-olds which are always exciting as they can be unpredictable due to the age and inexperience.

Four are making their debut here and there’s a couple that stand out for a variety of reasons.

But it’s really Field Of Gold that’s going to be among the best-backed here on debut for John & Thady Gosden.

The Kingman colt is a lovely grey who’s got a very encouraging pedigree.

Being half-brother on the Dam’s side to two winners with a 50% strike-rate, both a listed level.

Zanbaq is also out of Princess De Lune, won in 2022 in the Rosemary Stakes at Newmarket, placed fifth behind Jumbly over 1m in the Valiant Stakes at Ascot in July 2022 and also won on debut at Kempton.

Lunar Eclipse also won on debut, at Newmarket in November 2023 before a winter break and next being seen in a tough listed contest at the same course just last month behind Friendly Soul.

It’s no surprise to see this colt fetched as much as 530,000 euros as a foal and being in the hands of the Gosdens and owned by Juddmonte, this should be a nice winner at 15/8.

Consolidation was 11/1 on debut in a field of 12 but that had a 50/1 shot winner Dividend and a 50/1 second placed horse, Moon Sniper.

Moon Sniper was next seen at Royal Ascot in the listed Chesham Stakes, but could only get 11th.

The rest of the field are largely unraced since and it’s difficult to tell just how good that form can work out to be.

New Century was five lengths off of a comfortable Al Qudra on his debut at Lingfield earlier this month.

That winner of course went on to place fifth in the Group 2 Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot and has worked out incredibly well, as prior to that he was placed behind The Actor and Arran.

New Century and Field Of Gold make a compelling case for an exacta for form and potential going forward, but it’s a tough one to call regardless and a single on the newcomer looks worth the risk.

Vintage Clarets & Bergerac

Newcastle host a great card on Friday evening on the Tapeta surface.

Copper Knight won last time out at Chester in a decent enough Class 3 handicap earlier this month, despite being ten-years-old, he still has plenty of speed.

Upped 6lb might set him back though and he’s only had six runs on the all-weather before whereas he’s had as many as 89 on the turf.

There’s another 13 runners though all of which can pay off nicely as an each-way play.

Vintage Clarets is the one that sticks out the most for Richard Fahey, as he won this last year on his only start on the all-weather.

He’s been in and around his subsequent mark ever since and is only up a total of 5lb since then having taken a few defeats this year, some of which been poor and one at Chester that really suited his style.

At 15/2 we can hope he will get that kind of run that allows him to surge home in the final furlong once more having kept up with the pace of the leaders.

Bergerac warrants a small each-way bet to go alongside Vintage Clarets too, as he’s down to a very dangerous mark and has shown he’s got ability on the all-weather.

Having had seven of his 11 runs on the artificial surfaces since November.

Darnation

The Group 3 fillies’ stakes looks an interesting one this year with as many as 14 runners taking it on to scoop the £36k prize.

There’s a big penalty for four-year-olds and that should give these promising three-year-olds the chance to go close.

Darnation and Chic Colombine are worthy of backing at a price for that reason, with the latter only carrying 8-9.

She’s 5lb better off than Darnation, but the Karl Burke-trained filly is much higher rated anyway and won well last time out.

Winning at Dusseldorf by over two lengths in the German 1000 Guineas.

She was a disappointing 14th at the original at Newmarket a few weeks prior and seems to be back to her best, having shown tonnes of promise as a two-year-old.

She will be interesting going forward this season and should be a strong runner for the 13/2 price.

Orchard Keeper

3/1 for Pink Lily seems remarkable considering her last two wins, with the latest being by a comfortable margin to Night Breeze at Goodwood.

She comes up against another one on the verge of a hattrick, Post Rider, who will have William Buick on board.

The jockey has incredible strike rate at Newmarket over the years and leads the most wins by a mile over the last five years, with 66 winners from just 220 rides.

But this filly wasn’t that comfortable on her latest win and only just managed to hold on, but looking at the weights it’s really stacked up against Pink Lily who will carry 11lb more than Post Rider.

Churchill filly Orchard Keeper could be the one to surprise a few at 5/1 as a result, who has a mark of 71 which actually should be higher by the looks of things.

She makes her turf debut and steps up to 1m2f for the first time after a small break having last been seen in February at Chelmsford.

The filly was second to Cocktail Dress who won stylishly and got a mark of 80 as a result.

She should be able to improve on that for trainer Roger Varian.

Rainbows Edge

The Gosdens have another chance at a big win on Friday with Rainbows Edge, owned by the King and Queen.

She powered home stylishly on debut at Newcastle and that form has worked out very well in places, which suggests this 7/4 price is a steal.

Inherit is one of two Cheveley Park runners, but I’m yet to be convinced by her form in comparison.

Second to Rainbows Edge was Star Jasmine who won next time out at Bath, before being denied by only a short neck on her subsequent run.

But the most interesting of all was Bolsena back in fifth, who also won next time out at Newmarket, before placing close up in two listed races.
