Former University of South Florida Football Player Teigan Martin Dies at 20 in Car Crash
Teigan Martin, a former tight end with the University of South Florida Bulls, died in a crash crash in Minnesota early Monday, June 24, according to authorities. He had just turned 20 a few weeks prior.
Carver County Sheriff Jason Kamerud said in a press release that deputies responded to a 9-1-1 call of a vehicle crash on Country Road 122 just after 5:00 a.m. They arrived and found Martin’s 2013 BMW M5 crashed in a ditch. Martin was the sole occupant and was pronounced dead at the scene.
“The preliminary investigation determined Martin was driving eastbound on Country Road 122 at a high rate of speed, crossed over the westbound lane of traffic, entered the road ditch, and rolled his vehicle,” the statement read, adding that Martin was wearing his seatbelt and that it was unknown if alcohol was a factor.
The Carvery County Sheriff’s Office is continuing their investigation while an autopsy will be completed by the Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office.
On Tuesday, the University of South Florida posted a tribute to Martin on X, formerly known as Twitter.
“We are deeply saddened by the sudden passing of Teigan Martin. We extend our thoughts and prayers to Teigan’s family, friends, and all who knew and loved him,” the post read.
Martin was a reserve for the Bulls during the 2023 season after spending the 2022 season at Liberty, reports CBS Sports.
According to Tampa Bay Times sports reporter Joey Knight, Martin was no longer playing football at USF but was attending classes there. He previously played prep football at Mayer Lutheran in Mayer, Minn.
