Five observations from Germany’s 0-0 draw to Ukraine

With no Bayern Munich on tap for a while, the German national team is in focus, so let’s take a look at how they did in their friendly vs Ukraine…

Germany were all over Ukraine for 90 minutes, apart from some momentary lapses, but were left scoreless. Seeing a similar story to what Germany experienced with Flick in Qatar. Hopefully the missing pieces today resolve the issues in an otherwise inspiring performance.

The Musiala-Wirtz combination is going to be dangerous

In just the first two minutes, the two young starlets went back and forth for some incredible link-up play which seemed destined to end up with a goal.

Kroos was greatly missed

Toni Kroos is still one of the world’s best midfielders and there are a handful of players with the same technical ability and distribution at the moment. What Kroos provides was exactly what Germany needed today.

Andrich looks lost

Robert Andrich looked off today. Countless long shots gone way wide or high is never a good look when you are already looking out of place. He didn’t provide what Germany needed in the position today.

Beier has lots to offer

Max Beier hit the bar with his first ever touch for the national team. On his next, he was close to scoring yet again. His pace and movement along with a rocket of a shot can offer a lot to this team, especially late in fixtures. Everytime he touched the ball something good happened. He could be a X-factor for Germany in this tournament.

Ukraine can handle the top teams

Ukraine narrowly qualified for the tournament after some late winners in the playoff round, but they proved they can defend today. It doesn’t make for great football but they did everything possible to stop Germany. What a performance by Anatoliy Trubin.
