First Winner Begins Late Sire Improbable’s Legacy

WinStar Farm’s late freshman sire Improbable   began building his legacy July 15 when his son Maybe Eye’ll Call  became his first winner, taking a five-furlong maiden special weight in gate-to-wire fashion by four lengths at Horseshoe Indianapolis.

Coteau Grove Farms bred the new winner in Louisiana out of the Can the Man daughter You Caught My Eye, who is a half sister to Catch a Glimpse  (City Zip), the 2015 Canadian Horse of the Year, champion 2-year-old filly, and champion grass mare. The mare also is a half sister to grade 2 winner Old Forester  (Forestry), who in 2005 set a course record of 1:38.20 in the 1 1/16-mile Canadian Turf Handicap at Gulfstream Park.

The colt was offered during the 2023 Keeneland September Yearling Sale, where he was bought back on a final bid of $95,000. Sequel Bloodstock later sold him for $75,000 during this year’s Ocala Breeders’ Spring 2-Year-Old in Training Sale to Intrepid Thoroughbreds.

Maybe Eye’ll Call, trained by Steve Asmussen, won in his second career start. The final time in his blowout at Indianapolis was :59.70.

Improbable, an 8-year-old son of City Zip, won three consecutive grade 1 races in 2020, taking the Hollywood Gold Cup (G1) at Santa Anita Park, the Whitney Stakes (G1) at Saratoga Race Course, and the Awesome Again Stakes (G1) at Santa Anita en route to champion older male honors at season’s end.
