The Montreal Canadiens’ Alex Newhook is carrying on an important tradition initiated by another famous native of St. John’s more than 30 years ago.
The first annual Alex Newhook and Friends Charity Golf Classic is set for August 6 at the relocated Bally Haly Country Club at Clovelly Estates.
It carries on the legacy of the legendary broadcaster Bob Cole, who held his annual celebrity golf tournament at the old Bally Haly Golf and Curling Club on Logy Bay Road.
That land was recently sold to a developer, with Bally Haly relocating to the former Clovelly course, also in the east end of the city.
A number of Newhook’s NHL player-friends and other celebrities will be in the city for the event, although the list of who’s coming has yet to be released.
The golfing will be preceded on August 5 by a silent auction, autograph session and hot stove Q and A at the Emera Innovation Centre.
The event is intended to raise much-needed funds for several charities, including the REAL Program, Cancer Care Center and Iris Kirby House.
