Ex-Liverpool star Thiago ‘offered chance to return to football’
Former Liverpool midfielder Thiago Alcantara has been approached regarding a return to football less than 24 hours after it emerged that he is retiring.
The 33-year-old, who left Liverpool at the end of last season, brought an end to his trophy-laden playing career as he released an official statement on Monday night.
On Sunday it had been reported by Fabrizio Romano that Thiago was set to call time on his career.
In a statement on Instagram, Thiago wrote: ‘I will always be willing to give back what I have been given and I am grateful for the time, I have enjoyed it.
‘Thank you, football and to all who accompanied me and made me a better player and person along the way.
‘See you soon, Thiago.’
Thiago commenced his senior career with Barcelona after joining the club as a youth player and also went on to play for Bayern Munich prior to signing for Liverpool. In addition, he played 46 times for Spain between 2011 and 2021.
According to Sport, new Barcelona manager Hansi Flick wants Thiago to return to the club as part of his coaching staff.
The report indicates that Thiago, who is eager to commence his coaching career, is leaning towards accepting the offer.
During his time at Barcelona Thiago won the Champions League, four La Liga titles and the Copa Del Rey.
Between 2009 and 2013 he made 100 appearances for the club and scored ten goals.
Given his history at the club and his knowledge of the game, Thiago could well prove to be a useful asset to Barcelona if he accepts the coaching offer.
Thiago won the Champions League again at Bayern Munich and was also won seven Bundesliga titles and four DFB-Pokals. At Liverpool Thiago won the FA Cup in 2022.
However, he struggled with injuries during the latter stages of his career at the club.
