Ex-Indian cricketer commits ‘suicide’ | The Express Tribune

David Johnson had been battling depression and had not been keeping well in recent times, according to media reports

Former India and Karnataka cricketer David Johnson has died in a suspected suicide after falling from the balcony of his fourth-floor apartment in Kanaka Sri Layout, Kothanur. He was 52.

According to Republic World, Johnson had been battling depression and had not been keeping well in recent times. The Kothanur Police are investigating to confirm if it was a case of suicide.

Johnson, who was running a cricket academy near his home, is survived by his wife and two children.

“We were informed that he had fallen from the fourth floor of his apartment building. He was taken to Crescent Hospital, but the doctors declared him brought dead,” a Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) official told PTI.

“It is believed that 52-year-old David Jude Johnson fell from his apartment in Kanaka Sri Layout in Kothanur, giving rise to the suspicion of suicide,” a police official said.

The news of Johnson’s passing has shocked the cricketing community. Former cricketers Anil Kumble and Gautam Gambhir expressed their sorrow and condolences.

“Saddened to hear the passing of my cricketing colleague David Johnson. Heartfelt condolences to his family. Gone too soon, ‘Benny’!” Kumble said.

Gambhir posted, “Saddened by the passing away of David Johnson. May God give strength to his family and loved ones.”

BCCI secretary Jay Shah also expressed his condolences on social media. “Deepest condolences to family and friends of our former Indian fast bowler David Johnson. His contributions to the game will always be remembered.”

Johnson played two matches for India, but fitness issues limited his opportunities at the international level. Despite this, he enjoyed a successful domestic cricket career with Karnataka.
